The Machine Embroiderer's Workshop

The course for anyone wishing to learn or improve their machine embroidery. How to be creative with machine embroidery.  An observation of a simple subject such as a shell, flower, lichen rust etc, with paperwork on the first day will help us to explore an A-Z of techniques within a context of creative ideas leading towards a useful worksheet with lots of examples. You will have all the help you need to succeed throughout the course—so don’t worry about this first day– you will certainly surprise yourself! You will learn the different textures possible with a straight stitch and zigzag, progress onto tension techniques: whip stitch, feather and cable. Continue with an exploration into dissolvable fabrics as supports of other materials and for lace effects, and finish with a day on the materials that suit you and your design best. This could be quilting, appliqué, felt, paper…..each person on the course is encouraged to take their own path at this point. There are demonstrations and information throughout the course. If you can’t bring your own machine will we lend you the closest to yours that we have.

Let Val's confidence and love of machines help you to appreciate them too - make friends with yours!

The Advanced Machine Embroiderer's Workshop and embellisher

Free motion machine embroidery is no longer a technical problem for you, or at least mostly. But you don't always find it easy to know how to use it. What stitches to use, how much, how little. How do you successfully incorporate and integrate different surfaces with your stitching. How to include hand stitching. This course follows a series of exercises put together by Val to understand and develop your machine embroidery as a surface decoration or as a creation of surfaces. A useful and exciting course.

price: 780€  full board in own room, 730€  if sharing with a friend or partner. 330€ non-embroiderer sharing room. Self-catering on application.

Photography and Design for Experimental surfaces.

With local sculpted Romanesque churches, cloisters and interiors and other architectural bits and pieces as a source of inspiration, we'll come to terms with ways of using photography as a starting point for developing textile ideas and design sheets. A first morning visiting the local cathedral and cloisters and other interesting buildings, we then download your photographs and work with the computer to understand simply how to improve them or how to find inspiration in them by using photoshop techniques. Then we continue exploring paperwork and creating design sheets to lead to a selection of textile and embroidery techniques, materials and surfaces. A full and imaginative course for the embroiderer with some experience, but perhaps in need of a hand with design.  Included in the course for those who are interested is a chance to work with digital photography, computer adjusted images, designing for a computerised embroidery machine from the photographic images and working the embroidery. You will also get the chance to work with silk waste, metal techniques, Angelina and other techniques relevant to your design sheet.

price: 780€   full board in own room, 730€  if sharing with a friend or partner. 330€ non-embroiderer sharing room. Self-catering on application. All materials included.
