A Museum Workbook

The careful study and drawing of existing textile surfaces can be a great starting point for new creative embroidery and surfaces. Inspiring surface construction and decoration by hand or machine, applique and distruction and distressing of other surfaces by different methods.

This course aims to look at study drawing and information collecting in museums, particularly of textile collections. Photography in diificult conditions will also be covered. In the studio we will look at how to relate to the information collected by hand and machine and using different techniques of distressing and colouring surfaces, as well as surface creation in relation to laces and edges.

The course will include two periods of museum visits. The first day will be very much about drawing and collecting in the museums concerned, followed by a day and a half of work from this workbook. A new museum trip will be programmed to 'try again' once areas of interest have been defined and new details or ideas need to be looked at. Different museums will be programmed at different times during the course.
