New book "Art textile Art 1"  out  March 2010

128 pages in full colour. Bi-lingual book. £19,95 post free, order now, send an email galerie43@aol.com

Textile art and creative embroidery are increasingly popular and there are more and more books on the subject constantly exploring new techniques, materials and products. But we tend to forget that beginners also need to know the things that are so often taken for granted. New experimental books open the horizons for many who are already well on the road to successful textile work, but can also close doors for those who feel left behind.

In this series of books Val Holmes sets out a course to follow or individual chapters on different techniques for those who wish to know more about those areas.

This first book includes tried and tested techniques that help beginners with their first successful results. The methods are clearly explained, and further experiments are suggested so you can gradually find your own pathway enjoying and creating in textile media and embroidery.

Val Holmes is particularly well known for her teaching of art related to embroidery and textile design, and for Machine Embroidery. But her wide experience allows her to give helpful advice and guidance in all aspects of Embroidery and Design.
She has a B.A.(hons) degree (with mentions) in Embroidery from Manchester Polytechnic (now Manchester Metropolitan University). She is the author of five books "Gardens in Embroidery" (1991) and "The Machine Embroiderers' Workbook" (1991 plus four reprints) and "The Encyclopedia of Machine Embroidery"  (2003 in UK 2004 In USA) "'Creative Recycling in Embroidery" (2006) all with Batsford, the name in Embroidery books. And in French "Broderie machine -le piqué libre" (2005) "Textile Art Textile 1" (2010)

Val's Current Embroidery Projects

My passions as always are colour, light, composition, threads, my sewing machine and drawing with pastels, but also crayons and paint. My subjects are the landscape and architecture of France, the 'motif' exists to explore the juxtaposition of colour, the effect of light and of composition. These are questions that require a response informed by thought and experience. The techniques used also require experience and control. My embroideries are inspired by colour drawings done 'in the field', and they retain the sensation and meaning of the moment. The embroidery is  worked on vanishing fabrics, lutradur and other surfaces. These are slowly leading towards an abstraction of the esential elements. Transparent surfaces created on soluble fabrics are also a current concern..
