New book "Art textile Art 1" due out end of March 2010 128 pages in full colour. Bi-lingual book. £20 post free, pre-order now, send an email galerie43@aol.com Textile
art and creative embroidery are increasingly popular and there are more
and more books on the subject constantly exploring new techniques,
materials and products. But we tend to forget that beginners also need
to know the things that are so often taken for granted. New experimental
books open the horizons for many who are already well on the road to
successful textile work, but can also close doors for those who feel
left behind. In
this series of books Val Holmes sets out a course to follow or
individual chapters on different techniques for those who wish to know
more about those areas. This first book includes tried and tested techniques that help beginners with their first successful results. The methods are clearly explained, and further experiments are suggested so you can gradually find your own pathway enjoying and creating in textile media and embroidery.

Val
Holmes did her foundation course at Gloscat in the late 1970’s,
followed by a degree in Embroidery at Manchester Polytechnic (now
Manchester Metropolitan University). Where she attained a 2:1 BA honours
degree with mentions for her thesis. A further year was spent in the Fine
Art department at Coventry Polytechnic. This
was followed by building up a career as a freelance artist and
embroidery teacher, whilst teaching part time in an art college. After
several years she had become sufficiently well known to be asked by
Batsford to write Gardens in Embroidery
as her summer courses based on Hidcote Gardens were particularly
popular. The book was selected as Book of the Month by the Craft book
club. Her second book followed closely, and The Machine Embroiderer’s
Workbook and saw five editions. She was asked again by Batsford in
2002 (after a gap for children!) and due to the popularity of the
workbook, to write The Encyclopedia of Machine Embroidery, which was
published in November 2003. She has written a machine embroidery course
for Stitch magazine, and also writes for other English and French
magazines. The
increasing demand for her studio based courses persuaded Val to create a
venue where people could study and stay in the same place, so in 1991 La
Boulinerie was created out of an old farm, and was developed
into a comfortable environment with a relaxed atmosphere where students
could really improve their design and embroidery techniques. In 2005 Val and Claude moved to Luçon, to the Villa des Roses. As well as being able to offer two studio spaces and 8 ensuite bedrooms for the courses, the Galerie 43 within the Art Deco Maison Bourgeoise is a permanent exhibition space for their work. Since moving to France Val’s own work has continued to develop and is largely figurative, or abstract figurative and based mainly on her pastels and water colours. Her experimentation with different paint and surface techniques often lead to collections of more intimate work. She explains the two sides of her work as being "carnets de voyage". One is external and concerns the world outside, one is internal and concerns the world on the inside.
